A Brief History of Memorial Day

The origins of Memorial Day are steeped in ancient tradition. Many cultures around the world decorate the graves of their ancestors and fallen warriors. After the American Civil War, this practice gained popularity in America, with families and townships meeting each year in late May to honor their dead. Volunteers would gather to decorate graves with flowers and flags, after which religious services and potlucks were held on the church grounds. In 1970, Congress set the last Monday in May as the official observation of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is still a time to honor those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s also a time to celebrate our hard-won freedoms by spending time with family and friends. Many communities put on Memorial Day parades, festivals, carnivals, cookouts, races, and other events. Whether you’re doing the most or laying low this weekend, we’ve got the right products to help you make it memorable!
